Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) is dedicated to promoting education and awareness within its community and throughout the country through its lifelong learner programs and provide free access to educational resources for those not studying at the university.


MAHE offers non-university members free access to educational resources and research equipment through various programs such as Summer Research Internships, Experiential Learning platforms, and virtual labs, making learning accessible to all. MAHE also extends its reach globally through its online and distance education programs.


1. Public Resources – Lifelong Learning - Free Access to Library – Open to General Public


The Nehru Memorial Library at MAHE, Manipal, is a public library that was established in 1967. It is located near the C. V. Raman Hostel Block at MAHE, Manipal. The library spans 5,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 40 users at a time.

It houses a diverse collection of books, including reference books, fiction and non-fiction in English, Kannada, and other regional languages. Additionally, it provides access to leading newspapers and general magazines for public reading.

The library's services are available to MAHE staff, students, and the general public, with a collection that is being continually developed based on user needs. The library is automated with KOHA library software, and its book collections are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Furthermore, it offers internet facilities and an online catalogue search (OPAC) for users to check the availability of books. The library also has a Closed-Circuit Television System (CCTV) in place.


The books are available in the library on Literature, General Knowledge, Mysteries, Art, Culture, Humanity, History, Biographies, Dictionaries, Education, Philosophy, Children’s literature, Comics, Religion, Spirituality, and other general subjects.


Children’s Section: Nehru Memorial Library has a separate children’s section to serve children by providing children’s related books and magazines.

2. FREE ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES FOR THOSE NOT STUDYING AT THE UNIVERSITY - Free Certificate course for General Public – Online and Offline Certificate Courses.


MAHE provides free access to educational resources for those not studying at the university. This access includes various kinds of learning such as certificate courses, experiential learning, etc.


The Directorate of Online Education (DOE) is a constituent unit of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all. Established in 2019, DOE strives to revolutionize the field of education by offering high-quality online programs that provide lifelong learning opportunities to individuals worldwide.


DOE takes pride in its diverse range of online programs designed to enhance professional skills and academic knowledge while promoting sustainable development.


Students from 29 countries have enrolled in DOE's online programs, creating a diverse and inclusive learning environment that fosters cross-cultural understanding and collaboration. 2.2 Free access to educational resources is available for those not studying at the university.

2.3 Free Access to Certificate Course - Research Internship – Open to General Public


Manipal Centre for Natural Sciences (MCNS), MAHE Research Internships:

Summer Research Internship (SRI): The SRI is a six-week tailor-made educational event that provides candidates with exposure to research excellence in fundamental sciences. It also serves as a platform for them to interact with some of the world's most renowned scientists from India and around the world. In the year 2023, MCNS offered three major fields of study: Astrophysics, Particle Physics, and Nuclear Physics. The advertisement for the program was widely distributed via various science and social media platforms. Additionally, three expert talks were organized as part of the program. This initiative exemplifies MAHE's commitment to fostering quality education and global scientific collaboration.

The interns underwent a soft skills training session at the Centre, in addition to attending MAHE SRF courses given by MCNS experts. At the end of the program, the participants presented their research findings on their chosen topic and discussed their significance. Upon completion of the presentation and report writing, participants received certificates.

3. Free Access to Campus Facilities – Experiential Learning for General Public


3.1 Manipal Museum of Anatomy and Pathology (MAP)


MAHE offers open access to the Manipal Museum of Anatomy and Pathology (MAP) for experiential learning to the general public, as part of the Free Access to Campus Facilities initiative. MAP is one of the largest in Asia, housing more than 3000 human anatomy specimens. Thousands of school and college students visit this world-class, high-quality museum from far and wide and provide an equitable opportunity for learning for all. The museum opened its doors to the public in 1954 and was revamped in 2012. The sprawling Anatomy section displays specimens of standard human body parts and organs in a manner that makes them easy to understand. Each organ system of the human body can be explored as a separate entity. The Pathology Museum, which displays diseased body parts and organs, has a popular section on lifestyle-related diseases and their impact on the human body.

3.2 MAHE offers open access to the Hebbar Gallery and Art Centre for experiential learning to the general public, as part of the Free Access to Campus Facilities initiative.


The Hebbar Gallery and Art Centre envisions itself as a space that nurtures and encourages the spirit of creative expression and art pedagogy which was central to the life and times of artist and art educationist Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar (1911–1996).


HGAC opens its doors to cross-disciplinary engagement with artists and other cultural practitioners in and around the region of South Canara and aims to encourage a deeper and more meaningful relationship between the people, the student communities in the region and art. The Art Centre houses twenty six works of K K Hebbar from the Portrait Collection.


The Art Centre is part of the University’s initiative to establish a cultural centre promoting art and performance with special emphasis on the coastal region of South Canara.


HGAC is committed to its immediate regional community and global artistic community with a focus on artistic creation, pedagogy with an interest in creating a space for thinking about and making art. Thinking through making and thinking through experiencing guides the prime intentions behind the Art Centre.

3.3 MAHE offers open access to Dr TMA Pai Planetarium for experiential learning to the general public as part of the Free Access to Campus Facilities initiative.


Dr TMA Pai Planetarium, with a seating capacity of 70, conducts astronomy shows for school children, college students, and the general public on a regular basis. A Carl Zeiss ZKPII Model and Mirror Dome projection system are used to conduct the shows, which enthral the audience.


The planetarium attracts many visitors and helps ignite the spark of scientific thinking in young minds.

1. Rashtrakavi Govind Pai Research Centre: Started in 1965 in memory of veteran poet Govind Pai, RGPRC is engaged in research and publication, presentation of endowment awards and PhD programme. The Centre has a fine library and brings out a quarterly journal ‘Tuluva”. This is open to general public.


2. Regional Resources Centre for Folk Performing Arts: Started in 1983, the Centre popularly known as RRC, is engaged in research, documentation, publication and PhD programme. It has a very valuable audio-visual archive of the folk arts built over the years. This is open to general public.


3. Yakshagana Kendra: Started in 1981, the Kendra is a well-known training centre for Yakshagana, the traditional theatre form of the region. Guru Bannanje Sanjeeva Suvarna, renowned artiste, is the principal of the school and there is also a professional Yakshagana troupe – Yaksharanga. The Centre also runs a three-credit Yakshagana appreciation course in Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT). This is open to general public.


4. Kanakadasa Adhyayana Samshodhana Peetha: Started in 2010, the Peetha is engaged in research, programmes and publication about medieval saint-poet Kanakadasa and related areas. Kanakadasa was a voice of spiritual protest within Bhakti tradition of India. This is open to general public.

4. ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES FOR THOSE NOT STUDYING AT THE UNIVERSITY - LITERACY PROGRAMME


4.1 AKSHARA


The program called "AKSHARA" was launched at the MIT Bengaluru campus by the VSO team that was directed by Dr. M. Ramya and Dr. Rajendra Prasad. More than thirty members of our housekeeping staff and other workers are gaining literacy skills as a result of participating in this program. Speaking, reading, and writing abilities in Kannada and English have been cultivated via the implementation of lessons that are held for a total of three hours each week.

4.2 Project Vidyaa


This aims to provide 30 to 60 students in the adjoining village with remedial and extra classes. This will help them gain confidence and perform better in their classes.
