Student Support Centre- Caring through Conversations

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) is constantly striving to uphold global benchmarks of excellence in academic production as well as in the overall emotional, mental, and physical health of its students. Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has provided health insurance to all its students over the years, as well as hospital facilities, a special health lounge, and staff mentorship of individual students. On March 31, 2017, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) opened its one-of-a-kind psychotherapy facility to better assist and support the requirements of its students and to make the essential care for physical and mental limitations and impediments easily accessible.

By fortunate accident, the World Health Organization dedicated its year to mental health with the campaign tagline "Depression: Let's talk" the same year that the Student Support Center (SSC) opened. According to the World Health Organization, depression is the main factor contributing to mental and physical disability worldwide. In the age range of 15 to 29, suicide is the second most common cause of death. A suicide occurs in India every five minutes, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, and one-third of all suicides in the country occur among people between the ages of 18 and 24. The Student Support Center wants to help educate the public about mental health difficulties and has partnered with the World Health Organization to raise awareness of the topic.

The SSC offers free, private, and confidential individual counseling services to address a range of issues related to students' overall mental health. These include stress, burnout, time management, relationship issues, anxiety, and depression. In addition to providing information on wellness resources, the Center also organizes student outreach programs aimed at reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being

Student Support Centre (SSC) offers the following services to its students

  • Complete privacy and confidentiality in its services unless the student permits disclosure. All files and records stay within the Student Support Centre (SSC).

  • First line of intervention and counselling for any issues that may be causing concern to you or anyone you know

  • Appointments with clinically trained psychologists who have experience working with this age group. Some of the psychologists have received certification in QACP (Queer Affirmative Counseling Practice) conducted by the Mariwala Health initiative in 2021.

  • Appointments and referrals, if thought necessary, to a visiting psychiatrist at the same Centre

  • Website with relevant resources, information, emergency contact numbers, etc.

  • Awareness drive and outreach programs.
