The session commenced at 10:30 AM and lasted for one hour. It was led by Dr Jithin Surendran and Dr. Rajath Rao U R, both Assistant Professors from the Department of Community Medicine. The session was coordinated by Mrs. Kavitha, Health Educator, Mr. Rahul, Health Inspector of RHTC, Kateel, and Ms Nivetha DSMH, Intern. The audio-visual and lecture using power point presentation were used to deliver health education to the audience in local language. The Kannada-medium headmistress Mrs. Sarojini and the English-medium teacher Mr. Chandra Shekhar addressed at the event and commended the organizers' initiative. | ![]() ![]() |
| 06-07-2023- Lifestyle Diseases and Modifiable Risk Factors | Anganwadi, Elinje | 14 | The Department of Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical College Mangalore organized an awareness camp at Elinje anganwadi, which was attended by members of Stree Shakti, on 6th July 2023. Dr Ajay Mallya spoke about the burden of non-communicable diseases in the country. He also explained about the various risk factors of these diseases and how to tackle them. Dr Ajay explained the hazards of smoking, alcoholism, and sedentary lifestyle. The participants were made to realize the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise by explaining the benefits that come with such practices. Dr. Ajay also addressed the importance of taking care of one's mental health and how regular sleep and meditation can significantly contribute to overall well-being and emotional stability. The talk was followed by a basic health checkup of the beneficiaries. A general checkup with blood pressure and blood sugar check was done. The session was on 'Raising Awareness on Addiction & Encouraging a Drug-Free Lifestyle' which commenced at 2.00 PM and lasted for one hour. It was led by Dr Jithin Surendran, Assistant Professors of the Department of Community Medicine. The session was coordinated by Mrs. Kavitha, Health Educator, Mr. Rahul, Health Inspector of RHTC, Kateel, and Dr Sreedevi S R & Dr Babburi SaiHarika Postgraduate and Ms. Nikhita Arora, Ms. Ruchira Kale, Ms. Bhanu Thejaswi P, Ms. Arushi Bhargava, Interns of the Department of Community Medicine posted in DSMH, Kateel. The audience received health education through audio-visual, lecture, and simulation techniques. | 03-08-2023 -World Breastfeeding week | Community Hall, Paduperara Gram Panchayat | 50 | The Department of Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore held an interactive session for beneficiaries at Community Hall, Paduperara Gram panchayat, Bajpe. The session was on the theme of this year's World Breastfeeding Week celebration. It was led by Dr. Rajath Rao, Assistant Professors from the Department of Community Medicine. The session was coordinated by Mrs. Kavitha, Mr. Rahul of RHTC, Kateel and interns and JR of the department. The session started with a brief introduction to the importance of breastfeeding followed by a short role play by interns focusing on good positioning, good attachment, and adequate breastfeeding for the children. There was display of IEC materials and real-time sharing of experience in the community by ASHA, AWW and ANM of Public health sector and the frequent problems they face in the field regarding breastfeeding. The session continued with interaction with the mothers and community leaders regarding myth and misconception regarding breast feeding. The beneficiaries were given a take home message regarding importance of exclusive breastfeeding and use of expressed breast milk and its storage for working mothers. | ![]() ![]() |

Dr. Saraswathi, Senior Resident, Kasturba Medical College presented an informative and engaging discussion on "Menstrual Health and Hygiene". The session included Management of Menstruation and the necessary hygienic measures to be taken during the menstrual period. | 04 to 06/09/2023- National Nutrition Week 2023 | Rural field area, Kateel, Mangalore, DK | 300 | The Department of Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore held an interactive session for beneficiaries at three different places on three different days on the occasion of National Nutrition Week celebration namely PHC Kateel, Shri Durga Parameshwari Temple, Kateel, and DSMH Kateel on 4th, 5th and 6th September 2023. It was led by Dr. Rajath Rao, Assistant Professor from the Department of Community Medicine. The session was coordinated by Mrs. Kavitha, Mr. Rahul of RHTC, Kateel, interns, JR, and SR of the department. The session started with a brief introduction to the importance of Nutrition followed by a food stall exhibition focusing on special groups of the society including under 5 children, Antenatal and lactating mothers, and people with common non-communicable diseases like diabetes mellitus and hypertension. IEC materials were displayed and real-time sharing of experience in the community by interns and JR. The session continued with interaction with the mothers and community leaders regarding myths and misconceptions regarding nutrition. | 11/12/2023-Poster making competition – WORLD AIDS DAY 2023 | Government High School Nadugodu Kateel | 35 | A poster making competition was conducted at Govt high school Nadugodu, Kateel on 11/12/2023 for high school students in view of World Aids Day 2023 under the theme "Let communities lead". It was organized by the Department of Community Medicine, KMC Mangalore under the guidance of Dr Rajath Rao, Assistant professor and Dr Jithin Surendran, Assistant Professor. It was coordinated by Dr Jobinse Jose, Senior resident, Mrs. Kavitha, health educator, Dr Paarth Garg and Dr Sreedevi S R, postgraduates. A total of 17 students participated and the 3 best posters were selected and were given certificates of appreciation and prizes. | 23/05/2024 –World No Tobacco Day 2024 | PHC Kateel, Dakshina Kannada | 20 | The goal of World No Tobacco Day 2024, which falls on May 31st, is to encourage people to give up smoking and to increase public awareness of the risks associated with tobacco use. It has been observed world wide since the year 1988. Rural Health Training Center under the Department of Community Medicine, KMC Mangalore organized an awareness programme for the ASHA workers focussing on the ill effects of Tobacco and protecting industry interference on children as a part of the observance of World No Tobacco Day 2024 on 10 June 2024. Mrs Kavitha Shetty, Health Educator and Mr Rahul health Inspector coordinated with the College authorities and organized the programme. The programme was followed by the session by Dr Mithun, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, KMC Mangalore who spoke about the significance of the observation of the day. He highlighted the burden of Non-Communicable Diseases with a special focus on tobacco and empathized the growing concern of involvement of youth in tobacco consumption. He also stressed upon various ill effects of tobacco with a special focus on laws pertaining to the usage of tobacco. An interactive question and answer session followed the talk with a good participation from the participants. |
