The 17th Global Health Care Summit, a collaborative effort by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) was inaugurated on Jan 5th, 2024 by Dr. Arathi Krishna, Deputy Chairman, NRI Forum, Government of Karnataka. Inaugurating the program, Dr. Aarti expressed her happiness about the health summit organised in Karnataka. She affirmed the government's commitment to supporting technological and medical sector development.
The prestigious summit unfolded in Manipal, setting the stage for the convergence of profound medical discourse and cultural celebration. Dr. Sampat Shivangi (Chair, GHS, USA) not only provided insights into AAPI but also commended the historic organisation of the conference in Karnataka. He acknowledged the esteemed presence of Mrs. Vasanti Pai and MAHE President MAHE Trust, Chairman MEMG Bangaluru Dr. Ranjan Pai on the same platform. Dr. Anjana Samdder (AAPI President, USA) highlighted the significant Indian involvement in the American health sector and the aim of the global health conference to discuss innovative technologies' relevance. Stressing the growing focus on AI technology globally, the conference aimed to explore its possibilities in healthcare. Dr. Samdder expressed AAPI's commitment to collaborating with prestigious institutes like AIIMS, New Delhi and MAHE, Manipal.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred upon Dr. Ramdas Pai, Chancellor of Manipal Education Institute (MAHE). Mrs. Vasanthi Pai, who accepted the honor on his behalf, lauded Dr. Ramdas Pai's achievements and invited all attending doctors to MAHE. Prominent personalities present at the event included Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) Dr. Ranjan Pai, Dr. H S Ballal Pro Chancellor, MAHE, and Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh, Chair, GHS, India.
The AAPI Medical Symposium continued its legacy of delivering engaging and informative sessions, bringing together medical professionals and experts to explore various facets of healthcare. The morning commenced with thought-provoking sessions such as "PSA Testing - Quandaries and Conundrums" by Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, paving the way for a day filled with insightful discussions. Dr. Tom Devasia delved into "Intracoronary Imaging in Complex Coronary Interventions: Indian Trends with a Focus on Manipal Experience," providing valuable perspectives. Noteworthy sessions covered topics like "SGLT2-1 & HFrEF" by Dr. Dayanand Naik, "Cardio-Renal Syndrome with Newer Therapeutic Approaches" by Dr. Raj Alappan, and "Transcutaneous Valve Replacement and AI Technology" by Dr. Ramdas G Pai from the University of California.
The post-lunch session featured a captivating exploration of "Comparison of USA and India Zoonotic Diseases" by Jois Krishnamurthy, followed by "Innovative AI Management of Diabetes Mellitus" by Prof. Bantwal Suresh Baliga. The day continued with sessions on "Advances and Future Trends in GI Endoscopy" by Dr. Shiran Shetty and "Added Value of AI in Myocardial SPECT and PET Perfusion Imaging" by Dr. Vani Vijaykumar. Dr. Karthik Udupa delivered an enlightening talk on "Principles of Immunotherapy and Its Application in Clinical Practice."
As the evening unfolded, attendees enjoyed cultural programs featuring a captivating Kavybhinaya performance by Manasi Sudhir and his team, renowned for their contributions to the show "Kantara." The day concluded with a musical extravaganza by the talented Anirudh Shastry.
The AAPI Medical Symposium is poised for its grand finale on January 6, promising more enriching sessions, the release of a souvenir, networking opportunities, and cultural celebrations.

As part of its Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, the Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MCOPS) hosted a Walkathon on Tuesday, 14 February 2023, at 10:15 am to raise awareness about childhood cancer. The event's tagline was "Raising Awareness about Childhood Cancer" and money was raised for the cause. The funds were provided to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal's "Pediatric Oncology Poor Patient Fund" with a matching support from MAHE. In addition to spreading awareness about childhood cancer, the event helped those impacted by the disease, both children and their families.
The MCOPS principal introduced the cause and stressed the importance of raising awareness about childhood cancer. The most significant donor, Virochan C from the second year of BPharm, who generously supported the cause, received a certificate of appreciation from Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, MAHE. Dr Ballal officially flagged off the ceremony and participated in it to support the cause. His presence and enthusiasm greatly inspired the students. Dr Ballal has consistently been a steadfast advocate for social problems, and his participation in the Walkathon demonstrated his dedication to raising awareness of childhood cancer.
The Walkathon's route was meticulously selected to pass by all the essential Manipal University campus sites. Throughout the walkathon, the students carried banners and placards to spread awareness of children's cancer.
The Walkathon gave students an excellent opportunity to assist a worthy cause. MCOPS had a great chance to unite and assist a worthy cause through the Walkathon. It was encouraging to see the youngsters participate in the occasion and express their support for a crucial issue. In the modern world, childhood cancer is a big worry, so raising awareness of it is critical. The Walkathon was a little step in the right direction, and it's anticipated that it will have a significant influence.
National Seminar on Sustainable development in an unequal world: Public Policy Paths 2024

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), in partnership with the ISEC Bengaluru and IIPA Karnataka Regional Branch (IIPA-KRB) organised ‘SUSTAINITI’ 2024, a National Seminar on Sustainable Development in an Unequal World – Public Policy Paths 2024 on the 5th and 6th of June 2024 at the MAHE Bengaluru Campus (MAHE-B'LURU), Yelahanka, Bengaluru. The focus of the seminar were on the roles of public policy in sustainable development keeping in mind the challenges to socio-economic and environmental sustainability posed by urbanisation.
MAHE highlighted the existing need to recognise the importance of a trans-disciplinary platform to discuss the new-age challenges to sustainable development. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Madhu Veeraraghavan, Pro-Vice Chancellor, MAHE-B'LURU who emphasised on the roles of policymaking and policymakers in ensuring that climate change adaptation must be planned hand-in-hand with the human development. Quoting the dedication to campus-wide efforts at MAHE B'LURU, Prof. Madhu provided examples of efforts such as planting drives, water and waste management, conservation of biotic communities in the campus as committed contributions to the achievement of the SDG Goals.
Senior policymaker and visionary administrator, Shri. A. Ramanathan, IAS (Retd.) launched the website of IIPA-KRB in the presence of Shri. T.M. Vijay Bhaskar, IAS (Retd.), Chairperson IIPA-KRB, Prof. M.V. Nadkarni, Emeritus professor and economist, ISEC, Prof. D. Rajasekhar, Director - ISEC among other distinguished guests and administrators who graced the occasions. Three books authored by Dr. Annapoorna Ravichander, Ex- Executive Director, PAF; Prof. V. Anil Kumar, Head, CPIGD, ISEC and Prof. Jeevan Kumar, Secretary, IIPA-KRB were released as part of the event. Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for the collaboration between MAHE, IIPA-KRB and ISEC Bengaluru were also exchanged. In his keynote address, Prof. M.V. Nadkarni, heavily stressed on the need to reconsider the development as not an outcome of only economic growth but as the social impacts for communities. He also emphasised the significance for policymakers to contribute to circular economy initiatives through strong policy pathways.
Two important panel discussions - one focussing on the multiple dimensions of rural, urban and environmental sustainability and the other on the roles of public policy communications for acheiving sustainable development provided very important insights. Speaking on rural and urban sustainability, Prof. Rajasekhar and Dr. Krishna Raj, ISEC highlighted the need to assess the rural-urban links closely. Dr. Siddhartha Krishnan, Director, ATREE presented a unique perspective to balance decarbonisation and degrowth from reformist versus radical angles. Speaking on the roles of reliable data on environment and climate change, Dr. Indu Murthy, CSTEP highlighted need to strengthen national and regional initiatives that are aligned to global frameworks to help achieve India's climate goals. r. Annapoorna Ravichander stressed on the role of media and effective communication in influencing policy making decisions, especially using data, based on her long-term experiences in training academicians, students, CSOs and Government officers to name a few.
About 30 selected papers were presented with the research conducted by researchers, students and faculty members and discussed for their value-addition to proactive policymaking for sustainable development. Chairpersons of various sessions including, Dr. Pranab J Patar, Assam Science Society (New Delhi and NCR); Dr. Dhanasree Jayaram & Dr. Vivek Pandi, MAHE Manipal and Dr. Deepta Sateesh, SMI, MAHE-B'LURU stressed on the need for enhancing methodological and data reliability to plan policies. More deliberations on Day 2 focussed on the roles of socio-economic factors in producing effective policymaking chaired by Dr. R. Manjula, Dr. Vilas Jadhav, Dr. Akshata Nayak, Dr. V. Karthick, Dr. Indrajit Bairagya and Dr. K.C. Smitha from ISEC.
Speaking at the Valedictory session, Prof. Raghavendra Prabhu, Deputy Registrar, MAHE-B'LURU spoke on the need to a reliable platform for addressing the strategic alliances in building partnerships in the domain of public policymaking. The major outcome of the event was that the deliberations successfully provided a strong roadmap to plan decentralisation and localisation of SDGs at urban and state levels in order to acheive desired ground-level social impacts. These plans and roadmap were taken into cognisance by senior policymakers who participated in the event, making this a unique event contributing to the knowledge-base on balancing implementing decarbonisation and degrowth, SDGs, public policies and their challenges.

The Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore carried out a School Dental Health Education program. This program was conducted for pre-school children with their parents and teachers of Milagres Central School, Mangalore.
The program begun with inauguration ceremony wherein school the principal along with the co-ordinators Dr Anupama Nayak P and Dr Charishma Thimmaiah were welcomed to the dais. Principal of the school- Father Uday introduced and welcomed team members, Dr Anupama Nayak spoke on the significance of this school dental health program. After which school dental health program was conducted. In the program, 56 children and 22 parents participated and were introduced to the importance of maintaining good oral health and how it can be achieved with a lucid presentation done using videos and power point presentations. A role play was presented by Interns following this a live demonstration on brushing technique with the education model was also done. There was a Question-and-Answer session at the end. Both teachers and children participated in the session enthusiastically. The postgraduates, interns and faculty answered them with equal enthusiasm and clarity.
Followed by this we conducted oral health checkup from LKG to class 10th with a total of 452 children. Detailed intra oral examination was carried out and treatment required was mentioned in the information sheet and handed over to children. Children were instructed to visit our college with the sheets along with their parents. All the children co-operated well throughout the program
