Education for SDGs in the wider community

MAHE has engaged in Education for SDGs in the wider community through dedicated outreach educational activities for the wider community, which could include alumni, local residents, and displaced people. Here are some of the examples of programs conducted for Alumni, Local Communities, Displaced people, and refugees.

Alumni Outreach

Department of Medical Imaging Technology, MCHP, MAHE, Manipal organised webinar. Mr. Mr. Albin Babu M Wilson from Gulf Medical University, UAE delivered a talk on " An extended career guide for Medical Imaging graduates ", on 22.10.2022, 10:30-11:30 am through Microsoft teams. He Secured master’s degree in Medical Imaging Technology from SOAHS, Manipal University, Udupi, Karnataka in the year 2011 is currently working as Lecturer, Gulf Medical University, Ajman, UAE. The webinar was attended by department alumni, students, and faculty member of our Institute. Dr.Saikiran. P, Incharge Head, Department of Medical Imaging Technology, MCHP Manipal welcomed the speaker and Mr.Visakh T, Dept. Alumni Co-ordinator, Medical Imaging Technology, MCHP proposed the vote of thanks.

Nearly 131 participants have attended the session. The webinar received good feedback from the participants and all of them have expressed interest to attend similar webinar once again in the future.

Ms. Natasha Chahande who obtained post-graduation (MASLP, 2009-2011 year) from MCHP, MAHE, Manipal has given alumni session on 11th June 2021. She has been currently working as Consultant Audiologist and Speech Therapist at various hospitals and clinics at Pune, Maharashtra (Decos Software Development Pvt. Ltd., Umarji Hospital, Surya Hospital, Healing Touch Hospital, Listen and Speak clinic). The alumni session was organized from 10.00 to 11.30 am. through online meeting in teams. Total 87 participants including alumni, students, external delegates and faculties attend her session. She shared information on “3D imaging in Earmold Technology” and was beneficial to all.

World Autism Awareness Day 

MSW Programme, Department of Social and Health Innovation, Prasanna School of Public Health (PSPH), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal in association with Department of Speech and Hearing, Manipal College of Health Professions, MAHE, Manipal organized a World Autism Awareness Day on April 3rd, 2023 , event themed ‘Light It Up Blue.

The health awareness program was organized for the primary school children by faculty and  students from the department of Child Health Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal on January 12, 2023, at Academy School, Manipal.

The objective of the program was to sensitize the school children about Personal hygiene, the Importance of a balanced diet, and Japanese encephalitis

The program consisted of activities such as role-play and informative talk using charts and PowerPoint. The students demonstrated the technique of handwashing through an action song and children were made to participate actively by performing the action and thereby learning the proper handwashing technique.

A total of 100 students from classes 1 to 5 along with three teachers participated in the program. Mrs. Laxmi, the Head Mistress of the school appreciated the activities and extended her support throughout the program. Mrs. Sheela Shetty, Assistant Professor of the Department coordinated the program.   

  • Cervical Cancer & Awareness

In the article, Dr. B.Unnikrishnan and Dr. Saraswathy M V discussed and explained the causes of cervical cancer. They also highlighted some of the crucial methods & measures to prevent the risk of cervical cancer

TAPMI - MAHE – Manipal  Faculty visited 5 Government schools and examining menstrual hygiene practices among adolescents and their potential acceptability of reusable sanitary pads by providing the free menstrual pads.

"Leading Across- Creative Humility Leadership” workshop was organized by Manipal College of Nursing (MCON), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal in collaboration with the Trained Nurses’ Association of India Karnataka State Branch on the 15.05.203 & 16.05.2023.

On 15th May 2023 , there was a workshop followed by many sessions and one of the session on "Sustainability Drive and Leadership Action" by Dr. Jothi Clara Michael, Director of Nursing at IHH Healthcare, India. During the session, one of the guests emphasized the importance of sustainability drive in today’s world and the need to become a good leader. She discussed six key areas to position organizations for the future, introduced new sustainable leadership models for leaders, and compared them to the older models. Additionally, she spoke about the role of business sustainability and resilience and their crucial importance among nurse leaders

World Alzheimer's Day 2023

Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal and the Department of Psychiatry, KMC, MAHE, Manipal jointly organised a Dementia screening camp at Rotary Hall, 

Shankarpura in collaboration with Rotary Club Shankarpura, Department of Student Affairs, MAHE, Manipal, Primary Health Centre, Moodabettu, St. Johns Church, Shankarpura, and CSI Christha Mahima Church, Manipura. This year's theme for Alzheimer’s Day is “Never too early, Never too late," which underlines not only the essential role of Alzheimer's disease risk factors identification but also the implementation of proactive risk reduction measures to hamper and, if possible, prevent the onset of dementia.

Community Outreach Activity at Athrady Village, Udupi

On the occasion of World Pharmacists' Day 2022, Pharmacy Literacy Club (PLC), Centre for Public Health Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, organized a community outreach activity at Ambedkar Sabha Bhavana, Athrady Village, Udupi on  September 25, 2022. More than 25 villagers participated in health education by PLC volunteers. Dr Manu Sudhi and Dr Sachin V from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal explained the first aid measures for snake bites, pesticide poisoning, epilepsy, stroke, etc.

PLC student volunteers provided awareness on the benefits of refraining from alcohol and tobacco use, with skits and fun play, and distributed patient information leaflets among the community. The community program was a great success as all the villagers were actively involved. One of the villagers said, “I feel that such programs should be conducted on a regular basis and I am happy to attend”. Dr Sonal Sekhar M, Co-ordinator of Centre for Public Health Pharmacy, MCOPS coordinated the outreach program. The event was sponsored by Canara Bank, Manipal, and MTTN was the media partner.

On the occasion of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2022, Pharmacy Literacy Club (PLC), Centre for Public Health Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice, MCOPS conducted Antibiotiko’ 2022, a series of competitions and community outreach programs November 18-24, 2022. As a part of the outreach program, schools visits were conducted in Board High School, Udupi, Christ School, Manipal; and Green Park Central School, Hiriyadka on 21, 22 and 24November, 2022, respectively. The volunteers of PLC educated the school students on the judicial use of antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance, and its consequences. The students were also given health education on menstrual health and hygiene. The sessions were very informative and eye-opening for the school children. They even pledged to use antibiotics judiciously and to spread the message to all their friends and family.

In addition, PLC also conducted a plethora of online competitions such as quiz, comic strip, and poster presentation. In addition to students from Manipal Academy of Higher Education,  students of various institutions including M S Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Bengaluru;  Kampala International University, Uganda; Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Anantapur;  Charotar University of Science and Technology, Changa, Gujarat; IQRAA International Hospital and Research Centre, Kozhikode;  Geetanjali University, Udaipur;  Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow; Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi also participated in the competitions. An offline quiz and puzzles solving competitions were also held on the 22 November 2022 at Department of Pharmacy Practice, MCOPS. Both staff and students participated in the fun filled events with great enthusiasm. Overall, Antibiotiko’ 2022 was a very fulfilling event and was memorable for all involved.

Panel Discussion on “How to Improve Medication Use Among Public”

On September 24, 2022, the Pharmacy Literacy Club at the Centre for Public Health Pharmacy, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, organized a Panel Discussion on "How to Improve Medication Use among the Public" in honor of World Pharmacists' Day 2022. The panel included experts from various sectors of pharmacy, such as regulatory, hospital, community, manufacturing, academic, and clinical pharmacists. 

The panel members discussed medication use problems among the public, addressing issues such as antimicrobial resistance, antibiotic misuse, vaccine-related concerns, and recent updates in essential drug lists. Ms. Ananya Rudhra, PharmD (Intern), moderated the event, which was followed by the Pharmacy Literacy Club's first-anniversary celebration. Many competitions were organized.

One of the participants shared, "We really enjoyed attending the panel discussion and learned a lot today. We would not be bored even if it lasted the entire day."

Breast Cancer Awareness 

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed annually in October. During this month, various organizations, healthcare professionals, and individuals around the world aim to raise awareness about breast cancer, promote early detection, and support those affected by the disease.The campaign often involves activities such as fundraising events, educational programs, and the promotion of breast cancer screening methods, such as mammograms. The iconic symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the pink ribbon, which is widely recognized as a symbol of solidarity with those affected by breast cancer. Throughout October, you may notice many buildings, landmarks, and individuals wearing pink to show their support for breast cancer awareness. The goal of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to encourage people to learn about breast cancer risk factors, signs, symptoms, and the importance of early detection through regular screenings. Early detection can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment and survival.

As part of NSS activity, MIT-Bangalore ( Off campus of MAHE – Manipal ) team distributed pink ribbons as a sign of creating awareness for breast cancer awareness and encouraged. Distributing pink ribbons is a common way to raise awareness for breast cancer, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. 


Providing education to schoolchildren

Department of Liberal Arts, Humanities and Social Science, students have taken up a course in "English Language Teaching" for the school children of the local community. In this course, they study theories of language acquisition, syllabus design, teaching methods, and the processes of testing and evaluation. However, their learning experiences were confined to the classroom setting. To provide them with a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges of real-time teaching, and to know the communities in the neighbourhood we devised a program involving twenty hours of "Community Engagement," during which they offered a course in “English Communication” at Government Primary schools in Gantiganahalli and Muddanahalli.

Early Intervention and Family-Centred Services: Bridging the Gap to Participation and Inclusion for Children with Disabilities 

Public Evidence: International symposium early intervention family centered services

On the 16th and 17th of February, 2023, Manipal College of Health Professions conducted an International Symposium on Early Intervention and Family Centred Services: Bridging the Gap to Participation and Inclusion for Children with Disabilities in collaboration with Amar Seva Sangam, University of Toronto and McGill University; sponsored by Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. This symposium is the first of its kind to be hosted by Manipal College of Health Professions.

The symposium was focused on a partnership approach to health care, with families as the major stakeholders in the decision-making process. The symposium was held in the hybrid mode with offline as well as online participants. Over 175 participants were a part of this symposium making it an incredible experience. The symposium hosted a total of 18 speakers (10 National and eight International) with nine of the speakers presenting their speeches in person while rest nine joined us online.

Youth against Drugs 

The Department of Student Affairs MAHE in association with Ministry of social justice & empowerment, Government of India, Karna-taka state legal services authority, Bengaluru, District legal services authority, bar associa-tion (r.), Udupi, District administration, Zilla Panchayath, Udupi, Department of Empower-ment of Differently abled and Senior Citizens, Health and Family Welfare Services, Department of public instructions, Vaikunta Baliga col-lege of law, Kunjibettu, Udupi organized a district level workshop on the theme Youth Against Drugs - a strategic intervention by KSLSA through NALSA – legal services to the victims of drug abuse and eradication of drug menace scheme, on 22nd July 2023, at Dr TMA Pai Audi-torium, 3rd Floor, KMC, Manipal

Ms. Shravya Baasri – Research Scholar from Gandhian Centre for Philosophical Arts and Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education rendered the invocation. Ms. Komal Jennifer D’Souza, Research Scholar, Dept. of Commerce was the MC for the program.

Education Promotion activities for the tribal population at risk of school dropout

The objective of the project was to motivate and teach tribal children and help them achieve their dreams. Our task was to design and implement a plan that could help these children understand the importance of education and encourage them to pursue it.

    Ms. Aditi interned at Matrichhaya Charitable Foundation, and the experience has already been profoundly impactful.
    Matrichhaya is a remarkable organization dedicated to the welfare of mentally ill, retarded, roadside destitute women. The foundation provides shelter, medical care, rehabilitation and counselling, offering a lifeline to those in desperate need.
