Education for SDGs commitment to meaningful education
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) demonstrates 100% integration of SDG-linked education across all undergraduate programs through mandatory foundational courses and elective modules. Core compulsory courses such as Environmental Studies (EVS), Human Rights, Constitution, and Professional Ethics, and Creativity, Problem Solving, and Innovation equip students with sustainability competencies, civic awareness, and innovation-led problem-solving skills. Courses like Engineering Economics and Financial Management and Essentials of Management embed sustainable business and ethical decision-making principles (Environmental Studies Course Syllabus - SOAHS; UG Academic Program Handbook 2023-24). Together, these modules ensure every undergraduate acquires a foundation in sustainability, ethics, and social responsibility—fulfilling MAHE’s commitment to meaningful SDG education.
Beyond mandatory courses, MAHE enriches sustainability education through interdisciplinary electives such as Computational Intelligence and Environmental Sustainability, Renewable Energy, Energy Engineering, Farm Automation, Energy Auditing, and Environmental Engineering, which advance SDGs 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Humanities modules like Women’s Writing and Philosophy, Religion, and Culture foster gender equity and intercultural understanding linked to SDGs 5 and 16. Experiential programs such as SEVA (Society, Environment, Values, and Attitudes) and Sustainability, Responsibility, and Managerial Ethics (SRME) integrate field learning with community engagement—bridging academic knowledge with real-world SDG implementation. At T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), students collaborate with NGOs on rural entrepreneurship and environmental projects, developing data-driven approaches to measure social impact (MAHE TAPMI SEVA Program Report).
At the global level, MAHE ensures consistency in sustainability education across its Manipal, Mangalore, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and Dubai campuses. The MAHE Dubai Campus, for example, introduced programs like M.Sc. Food Science and Safety, M.Tech Energy Systems and Management, and M.Design in Sustainable Design, complemented by workshops on gender sensitization and intercultural competence (MAHE Dubai Annual Report 2024). Faculty collaborations with Deakin University (Australia), University Malaya (Malaysia), and Edge Hill University (UK) enhance SDG-aligned pedagogy through workshops on ethical leadership, public health, and environmental stewardship (Deakin-MAHE Indo-Australian Workshop on Patient Safety and Compassion). By embedding sustainability into curricula, faculty training, and international partnerships, MAHE exemplifies a systemic commitment to education for sustainable development. Its interdisciplinary, experiential, and globally integrated framework ensures that all students graduate with the skills, ethics, and awareness needed to advance the UN SDG agenda.
